Third Annual AOAL Dog Walk, it's a Wrap!

The Third Annual AOAL dog walk took place on October 15, 2022 at Falls Township Community Park on a spectacular fall day.  Thank you to the over 50 registrants that attended the event.    Most that attended the event participated in the walk and made it around the entire lake (~1.9 miles) before getting lunch from the food truck.  After lunch many of the members participated in the games with their dogs.  The raffles this year featured some amazing baskets and hand made quilts.  The lucky winners were all smiles.  We ended the day  with a slice of the delicious and beautiful AOAL cake.

Thank you to everyone who participated!  Your support helps us continue to bring comfort and joy to those we visit with!

 OUR CHAMPIONS AT WORK

Pet therapy is an extremely rewarding experience for all humans involved. Our dogs provide unconditional love and a calming experience during visits, but they receive the benefit of mental and physical stimulation.    It's a win-win for all.

Angel Amblers

This group is for our members to meet up for walks in public parks with your dog. It will be an opportunity to meet other members, and keep our pups social.

This group is for enjoyment only with no visit journal involved.

Please feel free to contact our committee if you see a day you would like to meet up and look for notifications when our members will be out.

It will be a short walk or as long as you prefer.

Soon we can meet up at an outdoor spot for coffee / tea as a way to keep in touch and enjoy company.

ANGEL WINGS

Being a champion/therapy dog team provide many opportunities to volunteer in our community.

If you are a long standing member who is looking for new places to go or a new member that is wondering what's next. AOAL Angel Wings is here to support, guide and extend expertise. We offer shadowing to visits and encourage all to reach out to us to stay active including our community events.

Currently we have several members who are actively visiting in senior facilities, hospitals, schools and local libraries.

 FEATURED CHAMPION DOG

Meet Sami (Samantha)

Sami was already trained when Miriam learned about therapy dog work from Sami’s trainer. Sami and Miriam did a practice test and passed the real test a month later.

Miriam and Sami have been visiting an assisted living and memory care center near home once a month for almost a year now.

Miriam was recently approached by Dove Hospice who was wanting a dog to visit the facility. Miriam had previously trained as a hospice volunteer and thought that this would be a perfect fit for her and Sami. Miriam and Sami were assigned their first client recently where Sami did very well. A little too well, as Sami was so excited and eager to please, she jumped up on the bed, at which point Miriam had a talk with Sami to let her know that was unacceptable behavior. Now Sami knows not to jump on beds.

This past week at the center Sami bonded with a 94 year old Korean War veteran. "She (Sami) lets me hug her", the man told Miriam. He became teary eyed as he hugged Sami and told Miriam he feels alone because he is the last of his siblings. The whole time he was talking to Miriam and hugging Sami, Sami was nuzzling the veteran.

On the same visit, Sami also got close to a blind woman who kept putting her hand out to touch Sami. Miriam repeatedly guided Sami over to the woman so she could pet Sami and get her share of kisses.

Sami now recognizes the facilities that she and Miriam visit and gets excited when they approach because she knows that she will receive lots of hugs and butt scratches as she brings joy to those who need a bright spot in their day. And at the same time Miriam feels that she has a sense of purpose has she and Sami spread joy to those who need it most.
